4-Reasons Why Re-Cycled Road Millings Are Filling The GAP

Here at Auckland Aggregates we have a focus on environmental sustainability. ‘Material re-use’ is a top priority for us, so here are four good reasons to consider using re-cycled road millings for your next job.

Road millings are sometimes referred to as asphalt or pavement millings and are the product of grinding and removing the topmost layer of asphalt covered roads. Often this involves deep milling work where the top 200mm or more is removed. This removed top course is all high quality aggregates.

More and more contractors NZ wide are seeing the benefits of using high quality road millings reprocessed into quality GAP products.

‘Apart from being highly resistant to the weather elements re-cycled road millings are considerably less expensive than quarried spec’d virgin gravel’, says Dave Stringfield, Auckland Aggregates MD.

With a move to greater sustainability in the production and use of GAP aggregates it makes sense to use a re-cycled product more than ever.

So here is a summary of the four top reasons why you should consider using Non-Spec’d re-cycled road aggregates.

Number 1.

Lower Cost Per M3

New quarried material costs are increasing almost monthly with the spiralling cost of diesel and machinery operations driving the M3 price upwards. Re-processed road aggregates provide a high quality feedstock without the production costs of quarrying. These initial costs of quarrying have already been amortised into the cost of the original project.

Recycled road aggregates processed into Auckland Aggregates range of Non-Spec GAP products are typically 25-40% less expensive than virgin quarried aggregates.

Number 2.

Preserves Natural resources

There is a global push to drive down carbon stored in any nations new construction infrastructure. While NZ currently does not have a carbon credits offset for using re-cycled graded road aggregates, industry is understood to be talking to government about this possibility.

It is already occurring in the UK: https://www.agg-net.com/resources/articles/asphalt/driving-down-carbon-on-recycled-roads

In short using re-cycled road aggregates in any form for any use is kinder to the environment.

Number 3.

Resistant to the elements

Re-cycled road aggregates are a highly durable construction material that not only resist hot weather but also snow and ice. Interestingly enough presence of 'ex-road aggregates' in paved surfaces allows snow to melt faster and make it more difficult for ice to form.

Durability means ‘life extension’ which also means a cost saving across the board – budgetary and environmentally.

Number 4.

Saving the environment

With every M3 of our LS range of GAP aggregates you purchase you are helping reduce the need for quarrying virgin rock. As current quarries are exhausted new sites have to be found at greater environmental and financial cost than those currently operating.

Product durability in line with sustainability is an uncommon trait these days.

‘Join the movement towards product sustainability by using more quality certificated re-cycled GAP products’ concludes Dave Stringfield.
