Aggregates Resource Pressure Creates Recycling Opportunities

Unrelenting demand for NZ based aggregates resources is pushing suppliers to look at other more sustainable and cost effective alternatives, says Auckland Aggregates MD, Dave Stringfield.

'One of the main factors contributing to this situation is the continuing residential building boom in Greater Auckland and the pressure being applied to existing regional quarrying operations which have historically met the regions growth demands'.

According to the NZ Aggregate and Quarrying Association aggregates are the second most consumed resource after water.

"New Zealand uses 9-10 tonnes of aggregate every year for each adult and child.

To build an average house, you need about 250 tonnes of aggregate – for use in concrete, asphalt, mortar and building products.

To build 1km of a two-lane motorway, you need around 14,000 tonnes of construction aggregates (400 truckloads)"   (Source https://aqa.org.nz/fact-files/)

Now, due to a long time relationship with a major road construction company, Auckland Aggregates is able to offer cost effective and certified recycled base course road millings to augment and underpin construction and drainage needs.

'Rather than using more expensive 'virgin aggregates' we can supply all GAP varieties GAP 10, 20, 40, 65  (formerly known as GAP LS) to do the same job. This is not only supporting the sustainability process of aggregates, it also contributes heavily to a reduction in our carbon footprint along with that of our customers and our customers clients - it's a win win all round', says Dave Stringfield.

'Not only are there environmental benefits, there are also massive cost benefits to our customers with pricing more than a 33% less than virgin blue rock freshly quarried'.
