NZ Government Introduces Waste Minimisation Tax

The government has introduced a waste minimisation levy of $10 plus GST per tonne to be collected by landfill operators starting from July the 1st, 2023.

Auckland Aggregates Manager, Dave Stringfield says his company is totally committed to a pragmatically sustainable waste mitigation, which is why pricing on AA's GAP and drainage aggregates made from re-cycled road millings remains unchanged.

Dave Stringfield says 'The Waste Minimisation Levy' implemented by this 'business friendly' government is a tax which it says aims to 'foster a sustainable and circular economy by promoting waste reduction and recycling in the construction and demolition sector'.

'It is unfortunate that much of what is excavated from residential properties cannot be recycled as the bulk of material comes in one form or another as soil, concrete, brick, aggregate, tree roots, and tiles', says Dave Stringfield.

'We all know that it is near impossible to separate these components & hence most clean-fill tip sites have decided to simply add the $10.00/tonne levy at the weigh-bridge from 1st July'.

'However our new tipping prices will take effect from 7am 30th June 2023  to give us time to remove spoil ex our clean-fill stockpiles before 1st of July', concludes Dave Stringfield.
